Episode: “King Asa, Faith, and Renovation”

Introduction

Good afternoon! My name is Eduardo. This is Resurrection Radio Podcast. I am your presenter. We spoke of the Book of 2 Chronicles that speaks about the kings of Judah. We are trying to understand how there is that distinction between the kingdom of Judah and the kingdom of Israel. We learn that for the kingdom of Judah, GOD Almighty is providing for them, and they are abounding. The kings of the south allow GOD Almighty to provide, to be able to defend them, and provide for peace, and have good things. The kingdom of Judah has reinforcements in the city, and they are able to persevere abounding. This is only through GOD Almighty that they are able to persist. We learn in the time of King Asa, even the people of other tribes begin to understand the importance of GOD Almighty.

The Worship of GOD Almighty Leads to Prospering

They begin to worship GOD Almighty over other belief systems that exist at the time. Individuals from other tribes of Israel begin to go to Jerusalem and worship GOD Almighty. They have the faith in GOD Almighty and begin believing in GOD Almighty. We are reminded that Jerusalem grows and there is peace. Everyone is abounding and there are great things being provided for. The people are worshiping GOD Almighty. There are so many good things out of serving GOD Almighty and worshiping GOD Almighty. We know that in the next chapter, it talks about difficulties for King Asa.

There are times of prosperity and peace and then decide to not follow the instructions of GOD Almighty and seek to decide things based on convenience instead of trusting GOD Almighty. There is that distinction.

“In the six and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa, Baasa king of Israel went up against Judah, and built Ramah, that he might not suffer any to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah. Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the king’s house, and sent to Ben- hadad king of Aram, that dwelt at Damascus, saying: There is a league between me and thee, as there was between my father and thy father; behold, I have sent thee silver and gold; go, break thy league with Baasa king of Israel, that he may depart from me.’ And Ben-hadad hearkened unto king Asa, and sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Israel; and they smote Ijon, and Dan, and Abelmaim, and all the store-cities of Naphtali. And it came to pass, when Baasa heard thereof, that he left off building Ramah, and let his work cease. Then Asa the king took all Judah; and they carried away the stones of Ramah, and the timber thereof, wherewith Baasa had builded; and he built therewith Geba and Mizpah.”- 2 Chronicles 16: 1-6

In this time, there is specific description that the king of Israel went against Judah trying to build in the land of Judah. We learn that King Asa decides to take silver and gold from the treasuries of the house of the LORD, from the temple. From the temple, King Asa takes silver and gold and tells the king of Syria to break diplomacy with the kingdom of Israel and either afflict them or go against them. The king of Syria listens to King Asa, and they fight against Israel. King Asa causes there to be a breaking of diplomacy between Syria and Israel because of how they were afflicting King Asa.

We learn from all of this of what we read is that GOD Almighty provides for King Asa and the kingdom of Judah to persevere, but we learn that King Asa did not choose to listen to what GOD Almighty wanted. King Asa could have prayed and listened to what GOD Almighty wanted and give GOD Almighty the glory and decide what GOD Almighty is deciding. King Asa decided to decide for himself before consulting with GOD Almighty. This is different from what King Hezekiah does. King Hezekiah consults and prays to GOD Almighty and listens to the prophet, and GOD Almighty resolves for him.

King Asa Does Not Inquire the Word of GOD Almighty or Prophet

For King Asa, instead of going to GOD Almighty, he decides to take money from the temple and cause a break in diplomacy between Israel and Syria. For there to be those difficulties for the king of Israel because of what they were doing against Judah. They were trying to cause difficulties for Judah trying to build a city against Judah. King Asa decides to use the diplomacy with Syria to affect the king of Israel. There is that description. They were able to take and carry all the supplies that were left there.

“And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said unto him: ‘Because thou hast relied on the king of Aram, and hast not relied on the LORD thy God, therefore is the host of the king of Aram escaped out of thy hand. Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubim a huge host, with chariots and horsemen exceeding many? yet, because thou didst rely on the LORD, He delivered them into thy hand. For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is whole toward Him. Herein thou hast done foolishly; for from henceforth thou shalt have wars.’ Then Asa was wroth with the seer, and put him in the prison- house; for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. And Asa oppressed some of the people the same time.”- 2 Chronicles 16: 7-10

Initially we learn that the word of the seer or prophet is not favorable for King Asa because King Asa decided to not inquire of what GOD Almighty wanted to do in this situation. GOD Almighty is able to provide attributes, qualities, or characteristics to a specific manner that GOD Almighty decides to give. It is great the manner that GOD Almighty is able to provide. At the same time, we have to understand that GOD Almighty provides for this. If we believe that this is innate, there could be that ego that is trying to lead us away from GOD Almighty. In this situation, like GOD Almighty states to Rehoboam, he thought he could use that might to resolve. That there was no need of understanding what  GOD Almighty wanted, and he could trust might or resources. This is what King Asa does. King Asa does not consult with the prophets or decide based on the word of GOD Almighty when previously that is what they did.

They pray to GOD Almighty, worship GOD Almighty, and GOD Almighty would answer and provide. In this situation, they do not pray to GOD Almighty, and he decides to resolve for himself the situation. The situation is resolved, but we learn that there is a seer and prophet who goes to King Asa tells him and reminds King Asa that when the Ethiopians were a large army, and GOD Almighty was allowing Judah to defeat them. We read about this in the previous episode that the Ethiopians have greater numbers, but GOD Almighty is able to protect them, and shelter them, and defeat their adversaries through the faith in GOD Almighty. King Asa prays to GOD Almighty, and GOD Almighty defeats His adversaries.

King Asa decides to resolve without asking GOD Almighty. There is importance in the distinction and the context that GOD Almighty wants us to pray to GOD Almighty. GOD Almighty wants us to pray so that He can give us a response and be able to decide based on GOD Almighty's counsel. For King Asa, he did not want to rely on GOD Almighty. Previously, because King Asa was able to rely on the LORD, GOD Almighty was able to destroy the adversaries of Judah. King Asa relied on GOD Almighty and was able to defeat his adversaries.

GOD Almighty Cares for the Righteous

“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to provide strong support on behalf of those whose heart is whole to GOD Almighty.”

GOD Almighty is Omniscient, Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Indestructible, Eternal, Infinite, and Almighty among other qualities that the human mind cannot understand. GOD Almighty is able to know the specifics. GOD Almighty knows all the details. We do not have to know all the details because GOD Almighty knows all the details. For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth. GOD Almighty is able to see everything. To provide strong support on behalf of those whose heart is whole to GOD Almighty. This is a reminder in the Book of Chronicles that GOD Almighty is able to see everything not only because He is in the Highest Throne in the Highest Heavens, but also resides with those that are meek in spirit. GOD Almighty is able to see everything.

To give strong support, provide deliverance, protection, and help to those whose heart is blameless towards GOD Almighty. Those that believe in GOD Almighty and are considered blameless have protection from GOD Almighty. King Asa is considered blameless because he was doing the things that were worshiping GOD Almighty. Because of the time of prosperity, King Asa forgets to consult GOD Almighty and decides to resolve everything based on himself. Based on his wisdom or strength, and the prophet tells him that in the previous time GOD Almighty was able to resolve. The prophet tells King Asa that he had done foolishness. The result was that there was going to be war in the region.

King Asa did not want to know the word of GOD Almighty and wanted to resolve based on what he had decided. King Asa was angry with the seer and placed the seer in in stocks. Then he decides to take out his anger on the prophet. Not a wise decision. After King Asa decides to take his anger on the seer, he decides to be cruel to the individuals that were believers in GOD Almighty. Because of that difficulty, there was difficulty for King Asa.

GOD Almighty Is Providing for the Lineage of David

“And, behold, the acts of Asa, first and last, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. And in the thirty and ninth year of his reign Asa was diseased in his feet; his disease was exceeding great; yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians. And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign. And they buried him in his own sepulchres, which he had hewn out for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed.”- 2 Chronicles 16: 11-14

We learn that King Asa had completed the purpose of GOD Almighty. Through King Asa, there was great faith initially, but we learn that it decreases when he decides to trust in money instead of consulting with GOD Almighty or the prophets. King Asa becomes angry at the seer for speaking the word of GOD Almighty. We learn that for going against the prophet of GOD Almighty, that he began to have difficulties in health because of going against the righteous. Instead of seeking GOD Almighty to protect his health, he sought help from physicians.

From Scripture, we know that the promises of Moses stated that if individuals believed in GOD Almighty and had faith in GOD Almighty, GOD Almighty was not only going to protect the nation of Israel, but also protect each individual. When they go through the desert and they are in the desert for a specific amount of decades, GOD Almighty questions them when did their clothes wear out and when did their feet become swollen from walking in the desert? This is talking to the amount of exercise and distance that was traveled. We are reminded that the people say never.

GOD Almighty Provides

Their response is that their clothes were as if they were new even when they had gone decades with their clothes and their health was good. That is GOD Almighty providing. There is that understanding. Obviously in today's time, this belief may be like the dietary laws that cause controversy. This is another thing that causes controversy. The health that GOD Almighty can resolve and heal people. GOD Almighty can protect. We learn in the New Testament that when individuals pray over the sick, that they can be healed through the power of prayer and repentance of sin. GOD Almighty is able to heal people who have sickness through the faith.

We know that is possible. That is truth. There are medical cases when people are restored and renovated through belief. That has happened. That is something controversial for some people. For some people they think that GOD Almighty is the Creator but they do not want to believe in that. For true believers, I think, that GOD Almighty provides, heals, renews, protects, and renovates. King Jesus Christ heals in the New Testament. That is something that happened.

When we question this in the modern age, how does King Asa have to go to GOD Almighty about his health? GOD Almighty is able to provide. That could be in different specific understandings. GOD Almighty can provide. We learn that because King Asa does not go to GOD Almighty concerning his health, there are those difficulties. We learn that happens. We learn that the son of King Asa is able to continue the kingship. We learn that the son of King Asa is King Jehoshaphat. He is also considered righteous.

Reproof and Discipline

The only unrighteous thing that King Jehoshaphat does from Scripture is that he helps king Ahab who is considered wicked against a specific nation. Instead of deciding not to go, he decides to help. We learn that King Jehoshaphat is righteous, and Ahab is wicked. There is that reminder that GOD Almighty does not want the righteous to help the wicked. This is because of the evil that Ahab was doing against the righteous. We know about the story of Ahab who is a king of the north and afflicts the prophets of GOD Almighty. GOD Almighty judges Ahab and Jezebel and we see that reminder of GOD Almighty loving the righteous and hating the wicked.

GOD Almighty offers reproof and discipline. Sometimes there is discipline from GOD Almighty. There is that reproof so that we change from the things that are not right. For us, we may not understand there may be errors of omission or commission, but GOD Almighty is able to see the intention of the heart and the mind. If the intention was initially pure, and the action is not good, GOD Almighty sees that. But if the intention is bad and the action is bad and the words are bad then GOD Almighty also sees that. There is that distinction. For Jehoshaphat, he is seen as positive for most of his reign and he is reproved. There are no difficulties that happen because he decides to obey GOD Almighty.

There is that understanding from the word of GOD Almighty. Knowing the word of GOD Almighty and having an understanding of that. It is very interesting knowing that even through the difficulties that exist, even through everything, we have to persist and worship GOD Almighty. We can understand why these things happen so that we can understand that GOD Almighty is able to provide for us. There is a reason why there were difficulties for King Asa for not following the word of GOD Almighty. We have to follow the word of GOD Almighty so that we understand what GOD Almighty's purpose is for our decisions.

The first thing that needs to be done is pray to GOD Almighty and to worship GOD Almighty. That is how everything is resolved. Instead, this time King Asa decides to change that. We have to remind ourselves that GOD Almighty can resolve. There is also the understanding to the reproof of deciding for the silver and gold. We understand that for Solomon, the difficulties were caused because of the foreign women. There were difficulties for Rehoboam because of the might that he thought was going to provide instead of GOD Almighty. There is that understanding that instead of seeking GOD Almighty to remedy and decide for things, they look for the comfort and help from the things of the world. For King Asa, he took silver and gold from the temple and made trusted in resources to provide for him. King Asa does not decide to ask for GOD Almighty's help, but takes silver and gold. Rehoboam decides might is enough. For Solomon, it was wisdom and the large amount of foreign wives. Solomon could have a wife, but the reason for no foreign wives was because they were not from Israel, and they did not believe in GOD Almighty, and were going to lead Solomon to idol worship.

They did not believe in the True GOD Almighty, and they believed in idols and that caused difficulties. That was why. The silver and gold being trusted over GOD Almighty also leads to difficulty. There is that understanding from Deuteronomy that tells us that the kings were not to have a standing army for themselves. The nation could have an army but not the king. This is the example of Rehoboam that he places his faith in the might instead of GOD Almighty.

For Solomon, it is faith in the wisdom and the things of the world and not in GOD Almighty. For King Asa, it is the silver and gold. They were not supposed to marry multiple foreign wives, because they were going to stray from their belief in GOD Almighty. The silver and gold for King Asa for not consulting GOD Almighty first. GOD Almighty is able to provide for all those things. Those things are not bad in themselves, but we have to trust GOD Almighty over those things of the world. GOD Almighty can provide for the silver and gold and the conveniences and things. The Promised Land and the abundance of the land was also provided by GOD Almighty. The important thing is that we glorify GOD Almighty. We glorify GOD Almighty above everything, and we praise GOD Almighty over everything.
